There is a buzz of revival of the GMC Jimmy, but there are limited confirmation from the General Motors and industry reports too. But why is this return happening now and what the GMs strategy? lets find out in this post.
Perfect time for GMC Jimmy Revival

When GM abruptly stopped production and sale of the original Jimmy model around 2019 i was disappointed but they had no choice. Tightening Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations made them do it.
Personally, I think the cooled consumer demand for pure EVs over the last year has given GM a brilliant, second-chance reality check.
As a more regulations ease, I think GM will have a lot more freedom with car design. People want a more robust, high output, gas powered 4×4. I think the main engine will be the high-torque 2.7-liter V4 TurboMax. With that being said, I have a request for all manufacturers. Please give us a small-block engine V8 option.
Makers like Ford and Toyota are offering hybrid engines and turbo power to their latest SUVs. Brand new naturally aspirated V8 powered Jimmy would satisfy most of buyers appetite is what i think.
The Platform Dilemma
To build Jimmy correctly GM will need correct platform which i think they already have. I have checked the two structural directions and have a favorite one.
- Platform: Midsize 31XX-2 (Canyon-based)
- Suspension: Multimatic DSSV Dampers
- Exterior: 1970s “Square Body” Boxy Silhouette
- Engine Wish: Small-Block V8 (or TurboMax)
I think the GMC Canyon’s frame will perfectly carry new Jimmy. All they need to do is shorten the wheelbase and cab to make a beautiful best trail truck out there.
Another really cool thing is this frame allows GMC to get the Multimatic DPSV Dampers from the Canyon AT4X. A square, retro Jimmy with this frame would be an amazing competitor and are a great way to take on the Bronco Raptor by flying over desert dunes!
T1XX Platform Full Size Alternative
Alternatively, GM could use a shortened version of the full-size Sierra and Yukon frame. It would make dropping a V8 into the engine bay incredibly easy and stay true to the massive footprint of the original 1970s K5 Jimmy.
I personally think a full-size two-door might be too bulky for tight off-road trails. I’d prefer they keep it nimble.
What i am expecting from return of GMC Jimmy?
If they proceed with the development now, we will see the production announcement in late 2027 or early 2028. We might also see first model in 2029 if everything begins now.
Now for pricing point expect a premium tag like $50,000 for base model while $65,000 for the high level trims. Following is the trim levels i think GMC will offer:
- Elevation: The clean, utilitarian entry point. Personally, I like this trim for anyone who just wants that iconic, boxy “Square Body” look without paying for unnecessary bells and whistles.
- AT4 / AT4X: This is where I would spend my own money. Heavy-duty underbody shielding, locking differentials, and that lifted, mean stance.
- Denali / Ultimate: The luxury cruiser. I suggest this for the buyer who wants high-end leather, open-pore wood, and an off-road mapped version of Super Cruise for effortless highway road trips.
My final words are, I believe GM should take a short break from the full EV race and focus on hard EVs and heavy-duty old-school mechanical engineering. This will bring a lot to the company, especially if the design is what I think it could be, the Jimmy would not only bring back memories, but would also be the best thing ever made by GM.
