After reading several standard automotive reviews about the 2027 Volkswagen Taos, I thought it was pretty disappointing how all of them follow the same script. They toss around numbers like “174 horsepower” and “$28,500” and tell consumers it can store luggage. I understand that in a review you have to include specs, but VW misses a lot in their car design and their budget conscious buyer perspective, especially since the reality is hidden to the buyer until after the sale.
This is even more so important for the 1st time buyers who would probably avoid losing money on a bad agreement if they actually knew. Looking at the data, I am led to think that VW genuinely sells two cars, or more, with the same name, and that is due to the variant in which drivetrain option you pick.
A crossing over trim choice with the same name could cost you from $3,000 to $8,000, so I wanted to share real data into this decision, to show you the reality of owning the crossover, and why I am trying to help you avoid crossing over into the wrong trim.

Suspension Review
So if you are at a dealership looking at 2027 WV Taos SUVs, I want you to stop looking at which color you want, or which alloy wheels you like but look at the rear axle. This alone will completely change how you experience driving, and the cost behind it is pretty impressive.
Front-Wheel Drive offers Torsion-Beam Axle (Harsh, rigid impact transfer). and 4Motion All-Wheel Drive offers Multilink Independent (Smooth, isolated control).
Interior Design

A lot of critics say they like the clean, minimalist dashboard, but honestly, living with Volkswagen’s current tech setup is unbelievably irritating. Instead of traditional buttons, they have smooth surfaces that use touch technology, which kind of just sucks.
On the higher trims, sliding your finger to control the dual-zone climate control and volume is not only annoying, but requires you to do it all while taking your eyes off the road.
The 8.0-inch infotainment system has quite the startup time of 15 to 30 seconds. It’s a horrible design choice to force you to just stare at a laggy screen for only a single task to get your maps from Apple to load.
But, The 2027 WV Taos is surprisingly good with cargo space. It definitely exceeds all expectations, so take a look at how it gets the job done.
My experience with all wheel drive
Once I sat in the AWD version, I knew all the AWD versions were fundamentally different machines. The 4Motion gives you a multilink rear suspension instead of the stiff metal bar.
Individual suspension means the rear of the vehicle is no longer limited by a solid suspension. It means the car can have the suspension of a smooth, calm cruiser, like a European car.
Also, I’m a fan of its fuel efficiency. With the EPA scoring the front wheel drive version of the vehicle at around 31 MPG combined, and the all wheel drive version a little worse at 28 MPG combined, Car and Driver actually did the real world highway test at 75 MPH, and the Taos actually got 40 MPG. With a 13.2 gallon tank, highway range is up to 580 miles.
Why i recommend to avoid FWD?
My experience with the FWD model was a lot different from the other models. It made me experience every little bump on the road and that is because of the cheaper torsion-beam rear suspension. When my left tire hit a pothole, the impact was felt through the entire car. That is very uncomfortable to the passengers and really affects the drive quality.
If you look at the acoustic data, the cabin is a loud 70 dBA cruising at 70 mph and a huge 74 dBA at full throttle. That is already bad, but the beam suspension is basically a stiff metal bar. That would be a horrible road trip experience.
High trims are trap
The 2027 WV Taos offers a base model starting price of $28,500, with the range topping SEL model priced at $38,000. I believe you should avoid paying that kind of money for a subpar model.
If you want to spend $38,000 for the SEL model and get luxury leather seats with a sunroof, I would recommend you turn away and look at the mid-tier Tiguan, as it is a much better value and has a price range of $31,000 – $36,000.
- The Taos SEL (~$38,000): The Taos SEL is a subcompact SUV with a subcompact engine and a subcompact price that is premium luxury. Since this SUV is stuck with a 1.5-liter engine, it takes a relaxing 8.2 seconds to accelerate to the speed of 60 mph meaning it also takes a slow 5.6 seconds to accelerate to the speed of 70 mph so that you can pass the semi-trucks on the highway. Most of this SUV also has a lot of cheap and hard plastics.
- The Mid-Tier VW Tiguan (~$34,000): From the previous Taos SEL, you can get a Tiguan for $4,000 since this SUV is bigger than the Taos, meaning you are getting a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for acceleration and a larger cabin overall for Tiguan and a quieter cabin overall also with better resale value than the Taos also.
Final Thoughts
Want an honest tip from me? If you want to buy a Taos smartly, skip the flashy Sport trim and the top-tier SEL fancy visual packages or artificial luxuries.
In my opinion, the Taos “sweet spot” in the line up is a mid-tier SE with option 4Motion AWD (about $33,000). With this you get a solid 40-mpg fuel economy, an independent rear suspension, and an 8-speed automatic that is bound to be decent enough.
